Village Band

Calling All U3A Musicians for a U3A Bradford on Avon Village Band

Throughout the 18th and early 19thC many villages and small towns had a “Village Band”. The musicians accompanied singing in church, but also played for dances, led village processions and sometimes supported the militia parades. Thomas Hardy, a keen musician, lovingly described village music in his writing.

In recent years the “West Gallery Quires” and village bands have become very popular again. Some modern village bands aim to recreate the sound of the old bands, though others include a repertoire which combines old dance tunes and more modern compositions in the same style.
